Good morning, Moscow. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 18th of September.

CULTURE NEWS

  • The City of Moscow and Moscow Arts Commission are opening the 16th Annual Palouse Plein Air exhibition today at 5:00 pm at the Third Street Gallery inside City Hall—71 artists will display their work until October 3 and awards will be announced during the artist reception from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.  Pullman Radio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A coalition of public school advocates, including the Moscow School District, announced Wednesday at the Statehouse in Boise that they planned to file a lawsuit with the Idaho Supreme Court to block House Bill 93 which creates a new private school tax credit. The lawsuit argues the bill violates the Idaho Constitution’s requirement for a general, uniform system of public free common schools — a move that followed its February approval and Gov. Brad Little’s signature despite public opposition.  Dailyfly

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The White Pine Fire in North Latah County remains 10% contained and burns 1,045 acres while nearly 500 firefighters work as USFS spends 1.5 million dollars a day to fight it—its cause is unknown and the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest stays closed since it started last month.  Dailyfly
  • Idaho Fish and Game announced that starting Friday, anglers will not be allowed to keep adult wild chinook salmon for at least one week—this closed season comes as a delayed run struggles due to warm water in the Columbia and Snake Rivers. Anglers may still fish for clipped hatchery fish, and the agency may reopen the season once conditions improve.  Pullman Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Idaho joined 20 other states in a federal appeal challenging a Maryland ruling that limits religious hiring rights because it forces courts to decide on church missions—an action some say jeopardizes religious freedom. The case, General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists v. Horton, is viewed as crucial for allowing faith-based organizations to choose employees aligned with their beliefs.  Dailyfly

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Luke West wrapped up his best tournament as he tied for ninth at the Northwest Iowa Invitational and earned all-tournament honors—he led LC State’s men’s golf team to a sixth-place finish with a 6-under score. The Warriors finished three strokes ahead of top-ranked teams and will compete at the Beartooth Invitational on Sept. 29-30.  Big Country News
