COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ross Dickman of Hire Heroes USA and Dan McGurkin of Mission43 helped veterans and military spouses find jobs, assisting over 230 people this year and 378 last year. Dickman visited Mission43’s headquarters at the Idaho Outdoor Fieldhouse in Boise before taking part in the 9/11 Miles of Remembrance 5K held last Thursday — part of local efforts to ease the transition to civilian careers.  Dailyfly
  • Palouse Days will take place Saturday with a pancake breakfast from 6:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., a car show at 9:00 a.m. and a parade at 10:00 a.m.—later events include an egg toss, dunk tank, duck race and live music at local venues.  Pullman Radio

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Idaho Department of Lands and Moscow Rural Volunteer Firefighters responded yesterday to a small fire on the south slope of Moscow Mountain that covered about a half-acre and may have been sparked by lightning—IDL crews stayed until the flames were fully out.  Pullman Radio

CULTURE NEWS

  • WSU alumna Aleah Johnson will sign her memoir at National Recovery Month events on September 13—she will sign at Pullman’s Whitman Recovery Community Center from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and at Moscow’s Recovery Festival in East City Park from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  Pullman Radio
  • The Moscow Chamber and Visitor Center announced today it will lead Artwalk, an event that has highlighted local creative talent for over 20 years. The season begins with a poster contest running until September 24 and the first event will be held on October 23 (4:00 to 8:00 p.m.).  Pullman Radio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Idaho announced its plan to convert 8,200 square feet at the Idaho Water Center in downtown Boise to expand its medical education partnership with the University of Utah—this project will support HB 368 that will add 30 new medical school seats and shift focus from the WWAMI program to address Idaho’s doctor shortage.  Dailyfly

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The White Pine Fire in North Latah County has grown to nearly 1,000 acres near the Giant White Pine Campground east of State Highway 6 — containment remains at 10% and new closures are expected soon as cooler weather aids firefighting efforts. Crews now include 350 firefighters, and the USFS has spent nearly $4 million battling the blaze.  Pullman Radio

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, the University of Idaho hosts the performance Every Brilliant Thing at the Forge Theater at 7:30 p.m. in honor of National Suicide Prevention Week, and a second performance will be held on September 14 at 2:00 p.m. The event is sponsored by Idaho Repertory Theatre, the Dean of Students Office — and Vandal Health Education, with free entry for students and $10 for general admission to support suicide awareness on campus.  Pullman Radio
